The wild fennel seed (03/09/2018)
The Fennel (Bużbież, Foeniculum vulgare ) is a common plant, and can be currently seen all along Dingli Cliffs, amongst other areas. This very aromatic plant is indigenous to the Mediterranean, whilst also a common ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine, apart from several medicinal properties!
This time of the month is perfect for the harvesting of the wild fennel seeds, available in small packets at The Cliffs Interpretation Centre.
The fennel plant has an ecological role in supporting the feeding of the caterpillar of the endemic Maltese Swallowtail butterfly, the largest butterfly in the Islands, called Farfett tal-Bużbież in Maltese.
